We woke up early this morning and decided to head out for breakfast. We've been eating breakfast in, but we've been wanting to try the Donkey Diner for breakfast. We drove over (it's not too far from the house), and they were closed. They open at 8am, and only Wed - Sat. :) Nobody melted down, though, and since we were already out, we found another place we'd seen and stopped there. We actually had a great breakfast - a welcomed change from cereal and bagel thins.
We came back and relaxed for a bit at the house, and then we headed out. We've been wanted to walk the Cinnamon Bay Nature Trail, and then we thought we'd go to Cinnamon Bay beach. The trail was very interesting; it went around the ruins of another sugar factory, and it also explained a lot about the various plants and trees around the area.
The beach was very interesting. It was a VERY windy, which made the swimming a little tricky. So we played a little bit and then decided to move on. As we were getting ready to leave, we heard a guy start yelling for help - he needed help getting another guy in. Apparently he turned around and saw a guy he didn't know face down in the water. At first he he thought he was just looking at fish, but then he noticed that the guy was twitching. It took several big men, but they pulled him in and laid him on the beach. It was pretty scary. It seemed like maybe he'd had a seizure while swimming, but he very nearly drowned. The paramedics came as we were leaving. I saw someone from his family and talked to her for a second. He was 25 years old and has no history of seizures, and she said he's a really strong swimmer. Yikes.
We left there and drove to another small hike we want to do, Peace Hill. BUT, the road crews are doing lots of work around, and it looks like they were getting ready to repave the parking area there. Maybe we'll have better luck tomorrow. Instead, we drove back to Maho Bay and enjoyed the peacefulness of the water there. When we got there, a small nurse shark was swimming along the shore. THAT was really cool, and the kids and I followed it ALL the way down the beach. It was a good walk and a good way to let our sunscreen soak in! We had fun swimming and did just a little bit of snorkeling. We were going to do more, but Matthew's goggles wouldn't cooperate. While Jeff was waiting for us to catch up, he found a GIGANTIC conch! Then later, I was sitting in the surf playing with Maddie, and I dug my hands in (for no reason in particular), and I felt something hard. I pulled it up, and it was sand dollar!
Well, we are snuggled in and watching Nim's Island, so I'd better sign off for tonight.
